A minor dispute over a soft drink bottle cap in Kumarkhali Upazila, Kushtia escalated into a violent armed attack on Sunday evening, leaving at least seven people shot and several others injured. According to hospital sources, Rabbi, Jony, and Sharuf were first treated at the Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex before being referred to Kushtia General Hospital due to the severity of their injuries. Others received initial treatment in their village.
Local reports indicate that the incident originated earlier in the morning, around 9:00 a.m., when Ratan Sheikh, after drinking a soft drink, allegedly threw the bottle’s cap, striking a man named Kaset on the head. An argument ensued, leading to minor physical altercations involving Kaset’s son Mamun and others. Local residents initially intervened, temporarily diffusing the tension.
However, in the late afternoon, Ratan Sheikh and associates, including Sardar Iarul Sheikh and Nasir Uddin, returned to the area near the Ber Kalua mosque, this time armed with both conventional weapons and firearms, launching a sudden attack. During the assault, seven individuals supporting Alam Sheikh’s group were shot. Several video clips circulated on social media, showing chaotic scenes with over fifty people fleeing across agricultural land, some wearing helmets, carrying sticks, shields, and firearms.
In an interview at Kumarkhali Health Complex, Rabbi Sheikh said, “This was a senseless act. I have at least 22 bullets in my body. We demand justice for this terror attack.” He claimed that the assailants fired from white plastic bags, making identification difficult.
Alam Sheikh corroborated the account, explaining that the morning altercation over a bottle cap escalated into a targeted, armed attack by the rival group, resulting in seven of his supporters being shot. Local residents expressed shock at how a trivial incident spiralled into such extreme violence.
Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Jamal Uddin, stated that the shooting was likely motivated by longstanding rivalries between the groups. He confirmed that extra police personnel had been deployed to stabilise the area and prevent further clashes. While no formal complaints had yet been filed at the time, he assured that legal action would be taken once written complaints were received.
This incident underscores the fragility of local security in Kushtia, where minor disputes can quickly escalate into armed confrontations, highlighting the urgent need for conflict resolution mechanisms and strict law enforcement.
