Robbers Identified Yet Still at Large

A brazen daylight robbery in the industrial township of Narayanganj has raised fresh concerns over public safety, as police have yet to apprehend the perpetrators four days after the incident—despite clear CCTV evidence capturing their faces.

The robbery took place early on Sunday morning at approximately 6:30 a.m. in the East Isdair in the area, near Rabeya Hossain High School. The victim, Farzana Afroze, a lecturer in political science at Narayanganj College, was targeted by three assailants who arrived on a motorcycle. Armed with machetes, the suspects reportedly threatened her with death before forcibly taking her gold chain, mobile phone, and cash. The attackers then fled the scene within moments, taking advantage of the sparse early-morning foot traffic.

According to police officials, CCTV footage from multiple cameras installed in the vicinity was promptly collected following the incident. The recordings clearly show three young men arriving together on a single motorcycle. Two of them had their faces uncovered, making their features distinctly visible, while the third wore a helmet. Despite this, investigators have so far been unable to conclusively identify the suspects.

A senior police official stated that while “important leads” have been obtained from the footage, the identification process is ongoing. Law enforcement authorities have expressed optimism that arrests will be made soon, noting that investigative operations are actively progressing.

Below is a summary of the key details:

The victim, speaking about the ordeal, expressed frustration and fear, stating that the attackers had acted with alarming confidence. She also voiced disappointment over the lack of arrests, despite the availability of clear visual evidence, and urged authorities to act swiftly to ensure justice.

The incident is not isolated. Residents of Narayanganj and surrounding areas have reported a noticeable increase in similar crimes involving motorcycle-borne criminals. Such incidents are often carried out during early morning hours when streets are relatively deserted, allowing offenders to operate with reduced risk of immediate intervention.

Critics have pointed to what they describe as inadequate police patrols and a lack of urgency in addressing street-level crime. Local civic voices argue that while law enforcement agencies demonstrate efficiency in high-profile cases, everyday crimes affecting ordinary citizens do not receive the same level of attention or prompt action.

Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman confirmed that a formal complaint was filed on the day of the incident. He added that multiple CCTV clips are currently under detailed analysis, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

As anxiety grows among residents—particularly working women and students—calls are mounting for enhanced patrols, improved surveillance coordination, and a more proactive policing approach to curb the rising tide of street crime in the city.
