A newly married couple’s journey home turned into an unimaginable tragedy in India’s Madhya Pradesh state when a truck overturned and crushed an autorickshaw, killing four members of the same family, including the bride and groom.
The incident occurred in Shivpuri district shortly after 25-year-old Virendra Shakya had married Rajeshwari Shakya in a temple ceremony on Saturday, attended by close family members. The couple was returning home on Sunday with relatives when disaster struck.
According to local reports and CCTV footage broadcast by Indian media, a poultry feed-laden truck lost control on the road, overturned abruptly, and fell directly onto a stationary autorickshaw carrying the family. The impact was instantaneous and catastrophic, leaving no chance of escape for those inside the vehicle.
All four occupants of the autorickshaw were killed on the spot. They were identified as Virendra Shakya, his wife Rajeshwari Shakya, his mother Anvesh Shakya (50), and his sister-in-law Rajo Shakya (22). Two others narrowly escaped death: Virendra’s sister, Bhuriya Shakya (19), and the autorickshaw driver, both of whom survived the incident.
Rescue operations were delayed due to the massive weight of the overturned truck. Local residents rushed to the scene in an attempt to assist, but the victims could not be retrieved immediately. Authorities later deployed a bulldozer to lift the truck, a process that took approximately half an hour before the bodies could be recovered.
The tragedy has left the family devastated. In an especially heartbreaking detail, Bhuriya Shakya—who survived the accident by a narrow margin—was due to become engaged on the same day, but instead found herself preparing for the funerals of four close relatives.
Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident, focusing on possible mechanical failure or loss of control by the truck driver. The CCTV footage is expected to play a key role in determining accountability.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and heavy vehicle regulation in the region, where accidents involving overloaded or poorly controlled trucks remain a persistent risk.
