Microbus crashes into house, driver held with cannabis

A dramatic road incident in a border-adjacent village of Meherpur has led to the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker after a speeding microbus lost control and crashed into a residential property, injuring a homeowner and exposing a sizeable cannabis consignment.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 am on Wednesday in the Tergoria area of Meherpur Sadar upazila. According to local accounts, a microbus travelling at high speed veered off the road and violently struck the house of Arshad Ali while the family was asleep. The force of the impact caused significant structural damage, collapsing part of an exterior wall and leaving the homeowner injured.

Following the initial collision, the vehicle overturned on the roadside. Residents from the surrounding area quickly gathered at the scene, where they discovered suspicious packages inside the vehicle. Upon inspection, they reportedly found around 1.5 kilograms of cannabis concealed within the microbus.

The driver, identified as Anik Hossain Biplob, was detained on the spot by local residents before being handed over to police authorities who arrived shortly afterwards. The injured homeowner received immediate first aid treatment from locals and was later reported to be in stable condition.

Police officials have indicated that the vehicle is believed to have been transporting cannabis from a border region, allegedly intended for rapid distribution elsewhere in the country. Authorities suspect that the driver may be part of a wider trafficking network operating along the porous border areas.

Sub-Inspector Anup Kumar Das of the Ramdaspur Police Camp, operating under Meherpur Sadar Police Station, confirmed that both the microbus and the seized narcotics have been taken into police custody. He further stated that legal proceedings are underway, including the filing of a case under narcotics control legislation. Investigators are also working to identify other individuals potentially involved in the operation.
