The Government of Bangladesh has issued a directive sending 17 high-ranking officials from the BCS (Police) cadre into compulsory retirement. This group consists of 16 officers holding the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and one officer at the rank of Additional Deputy Inspector General.
The Ministry of Home Affairs released a formal notification regarding this administrative action on Sunday, 3 May 2026. According to the gazette, the officers have been retired in the “public interest” under the provisions of Section 45 of the Public Service Act, 2018. This specific legal clause empowers the government to retire a public servant who has completed 25 years of service without providing a specific cause, provided the move is deemed necessary for the state.
The notification further clarified that although the retirement is compulsory, the affected officials will remain eligible for all pensionary and retirement benefits as per existing service rules and regulations.
The officers ordered into retirement occupied significant positions within various specialised units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the National Security Intelligence (NSI), and the Highway Police.

This recent move follows a similar administrative restructuring that took place on 22 April 2026. During that instance, the government sent 11 DIGs and two Additional DIGs into compulsory retirement. Those officers had been serving in various capacities or were attached to specific police units at the time of the order. The cumulative effect of these two orders indicates a significant transition within the senior leadership tiers of the Bangladesh Police.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has stipulated that the order for the 17 officers is to take effect immediately. As per the standard protocol for such gazettes, the decision was made to ensure administrative efficiency and serve the broader interests of the public service. All relevant departments have been instructed to facilitate the transition as per the government’s mandate.
