Bangladesh endured a dramatic batting collapse during the opening One Day International (ODI) against Australia at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. This match represents the first bilateral encounter between the two cricket nations since 2011. Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first, the host nation initially recovered from an early setback, only for a flurry of quick wickets to leave them struggling at 155 for 4 after 28 overs.
The innings commenced unfavourably for the hosts as opener Saif Hassan was dismissed in the second over. After driving a wide delivery from Nathan Ellis for a boundary on his first ball, Saif was undone by a sharper, incoming delivery. Mistiming his stroke, he edged the ball to Marnus Labuschagne in the slip cordon, departing for 5 runs from 5 deliveries.
Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Tanzid Hasan Tamim at the crease and survived a major scare on his very first ball, when Labuschagne dropped a catch at second slip off Ellis. Following this reprieve, Shanto and Tamim launched a counter-offensive against the Australian bowling attack. Tamim scored at a remarkably brisk rate, guiding his side past the 100-run threshold. The duo accumulated a 96-run partnership off 91 deliveries for the second wicket before the momentum shifted back to the visitors.
The breakthrough came shortly after Tamim secured his half-century off 41 deliveries. The left-handed opener was deceived by a slower ball from Ellis, striking it directly to Xavier Bartlett at mid-off. Tamim concluded his innings on 54 runs from 44 balls, a knock that included seven boundaries and a single six.
The dismissal triggered a severe collapse within the top order. The out-of-form Litton Das failed to steady the innings and was quickly removed, followed shortly by the dismissal of Shanto. From a position of relative strength, Bangladesh’s top order was dismantled in a matter of overs.
