A serious incident in Pabna’s Atai Kula police station area has escalated into widespread unrest following allegations of sexual harassment in Ariadangi village. The situation culminated in the vandalism and arson of the accused individual’s residence and business premises.
According to local reports, tensions flared on Sunday morning (14 June) when teachers, students, and residents of Ariadangi High School held a human chain protest at the Ariadangi market. The demonstration called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the individual accused in the harassment case.
What began as a peaceful protest quickly turned chaotic. During the gathering, a group of agitated individuals allegedly attacked the accused’s grocery shop and a tea stall, causing extensive damage. The violence then spread to his home, which was also vandalised and subsequently set on fire. Multiple items inside the house and shops were reportedly destroyed in the blaze.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as flames engulfed the property, prompting fear among local residents. Reports also indicate that several neighbouring and relatives’ houses were damaged during the unrest, although details of the extent of the destruction remain unclear.
Law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene shortly after receiving information about the incident. Police managed to bring the situation under control and have since increased their presence in the area to prevent further escalation.
Local political figure Oliullah, a youth leader, described the accused as a known troublemaker in the area, alleging involvement in disorderly conduct and drug-related activities. He also demanded a transparent investigation and swift legal action in the case.
Authorities, however, have urged the public not to take the law into their own hands. The Atai Kula police administration confirmed that the situation is now under control, with additional police units deployed to maintain order and ensure community safety.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Atai Kula Police Station, Md Mojibur Rahman, stated that the incident relates to an allegation dating back to 1 June. A formal case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act was later filed on 12 June by the victim’s mother.
