Bangladesh’s disappointing tour of Zimbabwe has taken another unfortunate turn, with fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ruled out of both the final One-Day International and the upcoming Twenty20 International series because of a hamstring injury.
The setback comes just as Bangladesh were attempting to recover from the disappointment of losing the ODI series. With one match still to play, the visitors have already conceded the three-match contest, leaving them with little more than the opportunity to restore some pride in the final fixture.
To address Mustafizur’s absence, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced two squad changes. All-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin has been drafted into the squad for the third and final ODI in Harare, while experienced fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has been recalled to replace Mustafizur in the three-match T20I series.
In an official statement, the BCB confirmed that Mustafizur sustained a hamstring strain and will return to Bangladesh to begin his rehabilitation programme. As a result, he will play no further part in the Zimbabwe tour.
Mustafizur had already missed the second ODI because of the injury, raising concerns about his fitness. Those concerns have now been confirmed, forcing the left-arm seamer to cut short his tour. His absence is another significant setback for Bangladesh’s pace attack, given his experience and ability to deliver in all phases of limited-overs cricket, particularly during the death overs.
The injury has also altered Taskin Ahmed’s immediate plans. The fast bowler had initially been granted leave from the T20I series so that he could participate in the Lanka Premier League. Following Mustafizur’s withdrawal, however, Taskin’s leave has been cancelled and he will instead join the national squad for the T20 matches against Zimbabwe.
Bangladesh had already been dealing with injury concerns before Mustafizur’s setback. Opening batter Litton Das was ruled out of the ODI series with an injury earlier in the tour, prompting the selectors to call up Parvez Hossain Emon as his replacement. The latest fitness issue adds to the challenges facing the team as it looks to regroup after a disappointing ODI campaign.
Mohammad Saifuddin’s return provides Bangladesh with an additional seam-bowling option as well as useful lower-order batting depth. Having previously represented the national side across both white-ball formats, Saifuddin will be eager to make an immediate impact if selected for the series finale.
Despite already losing the ODI series, Bangladesh will aim to finish the 50-over leg of the tour on a positive note when they face Zimbabwe in the third and final ODI in Harare. A victory would help restore confidence before attention turns to the shorter format.
The T20I series is scheduled to begin on 15 July, with the remaining two matches set to be played on 17 and 19 July. All three fixtures will take place in Bulawayo, where Bangladesh will hope to produce a stronger performance and end the tour on a more encouraging note despite the growing injury list.
