Tariq Rahman Chairs Pivotal BNP Standing Committee Strategy Meeting

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has unveiled a comprehensive suite of strategic decisions following a high-level meeting of its Standing Committee, the party’s supreme policy-making forum. Chaired by the BNP Chairman and Prime Minister, Tariq Rahman, the session focused heavily on the timely execution of the party’s electoral manifesto, upcoming local government elections, international diplomacy, and the strengthening of internal organisational frameworks.

The decisions were formally disclosed in a press release issued on Sunday, following the extensive deliberations held on Saturday at the BNP Chairman’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka. The meeting saw the physical attendance of the party’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, alongside senior Standing Committee members. Highlighting the administration’s reliance on digital governance, Mirza Abbas, a Standing Committee member and Political Advisor to the Prime Minister, participated virtually from Malaysia.

A primary focus of the session was an audit of the current administration’s priority welfare initiatives. The Standing Committee expressed satisfaction with the progress of several key projects, notably the distribution of Family Cards and Farmer Cards, the national canal-excavation programme, and the disbursement of allowances for clerics across various religious institutions. The committee expressed strong optimism that the targets outlined in the BNP’s declared election manifesto would be achieved within the stipulated timeframe, highly praising the direct initiatives taken by Prime Minister Tariq Rahman to expedite these welfare schemes.

However, the meeting was not without sharp political critique. The Standing Committee robustly condemned what it described as attempts by opposition factions to mislead the public regarding the “July Charter” and proposals for a national referendum. To counteract this narrative, the leadership resolved to intensify party publicity and expand grassroots organizational activities, ensuring the BNP’s governance philosophy and policy positions are clearly articulated to the electorate.

With local government elections on the horizon, the central leadership directed all regional and tier-based units to accelerate their organisational preparations. The Secretary General has been tasked with organising a meeting of the National Executive Committee as swiftly as possible to coordinate these efforts. Furthermore, the committee conducted an initial review of the 2026 general election results, commissioning a comprehensive, formal report on the election to be drafted under the supervision of Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.

Geopolitics and foreign affairs also dominated the agenda. The committee evaluated the Prime Minister’s recent official visits to Malaysia and China, concluding that these diplomatic missions would play a positive role in strengthening economic cooperation and development partnerships. The committee formally congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful outcomes of these overseas tours.

On the global stage, the BNP leadership expressed profound concern over the resurgence of conflict between Iran and the United States. Issuing a formal call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the committee urged both nations to seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue. The meeting noted that the escalation of this conflict threatens to severely destabilise the economy of the wider Middle East, with adverse ripple effects hitting developing economies globally.

Domestically, the committee celebrated a major diplomatic milestone, hailing the election of Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman as the President of the United Nations General Assembly. The leadership viewed this as a historic achievement that elevates Bangladesh’s global standing and provides a strategic platform to advocate for a permanent solution to the protracted Rohingya refugee crisis. Conversely, the meeting concluded with domestic warnings, as the committee voiced deep anxiety over the unchecked spread of narcotics across the country, demanding more stringent law enforcement measures to curb the crisis.
