Suspects Remanded Over Brutal Railway Station Murder

Five suspects have been remanded in police custody for three days following the brutal murder and robbery of a 70-year-old railway station cleaner in Narsingdi. The suspects were brought before the Narsingdi District Court on Sunday, 12 July 2026, amid growing public outrage over the fatal assault of a vulnerable elderly woman who had dedicated a quarter of a century to serving commuters.

Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar, the investigating officer overseeing the case, presented the accused before the bench and formally petitioned for a seven-day remand to facilitate deep interrogation. Following a detailed hearing, Judge Meshkatul Islam granted law enforcement authorities a three-day window to question the detainees in custody.

The legal breakthrough follows a highly coordinated joint operation launched on Friday across Raypura and Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar Upazila. A combined task force consisting of the local police, railway authorities, and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) tracked down and apprehended the five men. Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Masudur Parvez, the commanding officer of RAB-11, subsequently confirmed the arrests during a press briefing, detailing the swift multi-agency response after the crime sent shockwaves through the community.

The unfolding investigation has shed light on the tragic life of the victim, who was widely known to locals as Bobi Begum. Investigators revealed that the speech-impaired woman had arrived at the Methikanda railway station aboard a train approximately 25 years ago. Unable to articulate her identity or origin, local residents warmly adopted her, bestowing upon her the name Bobi Begum. For two and a half decades, she survived by cleaning the station platforms and public toilets, scraping together a livelihood from the small coins offered by passing commuters. Through years of meticulous thrift, she had managed to save roughly 20,000 Taka, a modest sum kept in her living quarters.

Tragedy struck on 4 July when a gang of criminals breached her room at the railway station. The intruders severely beat the elderly woman before fleeing with her entire life savings. Discovered with critical injuries, she was rushed to the Raypura Upazila Health Complex. As her physiological condition deteriorated sharply, medical professionals ordered an emergency transfer to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital on 7 July. Tragically, she passed away inside the ambulance whilst en route to the secondary care facility. A murder case was subsequently filed at the Bhairab Railway Police Station.

The post-mortem investigation unexpectedly resolved a decades-old mystery surrounding the cleaner’s true identity. Fingerprint records and subsequent tracing revealed that Bobi Begum was actually Wahida Begum, a native of Sakhatia village in the Naruyamala Union of Bogra’s Gabtoli Upazila. Following the successive deaths of her husband and her only daughter years ago, deep grief and emotional distress prompted her to leave her ancestral home. She severed all ties, remaining completely disconnected from her relatives for 25 years.

On Sunday afternoon, a poignant scene unfolded at Raypura as 14 family members—including her two sisters and a brother—travelled all the way from Bogra to visit her resting place. The grieving relatives offered prayers at her grave before walking through the small station room at Methikanda where she had lived out her final years, visibly overcome with emotion as they handled her few personal belongings and viewed her long-term place of work.

Police officials have assured the family that the investigation is being handled with the highest priority to ensure that those responsible for the heinous attack face the full rigor of the law.
