A serious incident occurred during a Delhi Premier League match at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium when umpire Dharmesh Bharadwaj was struck on the face by a cricket ball and subsequently taken to an intensive care unit for observation, according to reports.
The incident happened during the 18th over of the match between East Delhi Riders and New Delhi Tigers. Riders bowler Ashish Meena delivered the ball, which Tigers batter Lakshay Thareja drove straight back down the ground. The powerful shot travelled towards Bharadwaj, who was positioned behind the bowler, and struck one side of his face.
The impact left Bharadwaj requiring immediate medical attention. Thareja appeared visibly shocked and distressed following the incident, while attention on the field quickly turned towards the injured umpire.
According to reports, Bharadwaj was taken to hospital after being hit and was later kept in the intensive care unit so that doctors could monitor his condition. No detailed medical update on the extent of his injury was immediately available.
The incident is particularly notable because Bharadwaj had already suffered an injury during an earlier match in the same tournament, when he was hurt on the shoulder. He is a Board of Control for Cricket in India-listed Indian umpire and has previously officiated in the Delhi Premier League.
Umpires, particularly those standing at the bowler’s end, can be exposed to powerful straight drives travelling at considerable speed. Unlike batters and wicketkeepers, they have limited time to react when a ball is struck directly towards them. Although such incidents are relatively uncommon, injuries to match officials from firmly struck cricket balls have occurred at different levels of the sport.
The match itself produced a convincing result for East Delhi Riders. Batting first, the Riders posted 192 for seven from their innings, building their total around several useful contributions.
Mehra and Rana gave the side an excellent start, putting on 62 runs for the opening wicket in just 5.4 overs. Mehra scored 35 from 21 deliveries, while Rana contributed 33 from 22 balls.
Mayank Rawat then added further impetus with a brisk 40 from 23 deliveries. Suryansh Raina also made an important contribution, scoring 33 from 21 balls as the Riders reached 192 for seven.
New Delhi Tigers began their chase positively while attempting to overhaul the 193-run target. Their progress, however, was disrupted by a steady fall of wickets. By 10.2 overs, they had slipped to 94 for four, leaving them with a difficult task in the second half of the innings.
The Tigers were eventually bowled out for 156, handing East Delhi Riders a 36-run victory.
Ashish Meena played a key role with the ball as well as contributing to the match’s most talked-about moment. He finished with three wickets from his four overs, conceding 32 runs.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium, one of Delhi’s major cricket venues, is regularly used for domestic and international fixtures. The venue is also scheduled to host an international fixture between India and Afghanistan, adding to the significance of the ground on the current cricket calendar.
For the Delhi Premier League, however, the immediate concern remained Bharadwaj’s condition after the unexpected blow. His decision to leave the field for medical assessment underlines the risks match officials can face while carrying out their duties, particularly when powerful shots are struck towards the bowler’s end.
