A romantic dispute flared into violent village clashes in Madaripur’s Rajoir upazila on Thursday morning, leaving at least ten people injured.
The incident unfolded at around half-past ten in the morning within Purba Swarmangal village, located under the Rajoir municipality. Local authorities and residents reported that the confrontation stemmed from a disagreement on Wednesday night involving a couple meeting within a local cluster village. Supporters of Rahim, a former councillor and resident of Hridoy Nandi village, crossed paths with associates of Zakaria Khalashi from Purba Swarmangal village, leading to a tense verbal exchange over interference in the pair’s relationship.
The initial argument escalated rapidly by Thursday morning. Armed with crude, locally made weapons, factions from both sides converged and engaged in a pitched battle that lasted for nearly an hour. The violence disrupted the locality and resulted in injuries to at least ten individuals, including locals named Yar Ali and Akkas.
Emergency responders and locals rushed the wounded to the Rajoir Upazila Health Complex and various local clinics for urgent medical attention. Due to the severity of their injuries, attending physicians at the health complex transferred two of the casualties to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.
Law enforcement officers rushed to the scene upon receiving reports of the unrest. Police intervention successfully brought the situation under control, restoring calm to the area.
Rajoir Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Sheikh Aminul Islam, confirmed that officers acted swiftly to contain the disturbance. He noted that the local security situation is now entirely normal, though police personnel remain alert to prevent any potential retaliatory flare-ups between the two groups.
