The Directorate General of Health Services has reported five additional fatalities linked to measles symptoms over a recent twenty-four-hour period, bringing the total death toll since the middle of March to 955.
Health authorities noted that these fatalities occurred between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning. The ongoing public health challenge, which began tracking systematically on 15 March, has comprised both confirmed cases of the virus and patients exhibiting severe clinical symptoms associated with the disease. Out of the 955 total deaths recorded during this timeframe, 856 individuals passed away while displaying symptoms, whereas 99 deaths have been laboratory-confirmed as measles.
Public health specialists and epidemiologists point out that while measles can affect individuals across all age demographics, children remain the most vulnerable cohort. During an active epidemiological outbreak, health protocols dictate that fatalities presenting clinical symptoms consistent with the infection are catalogued under the outbreak’s overall toll, ensuring comprehensive tracking even where specific post-mortem diagnostics are pending.
In addition to the fatalities, surveillance data indicates a persistent rise in morbidity. Over the final twenty-four-hour reporting window, 956 new individuals presented with suspected symptoms nationwide. This elevates the cumulative count of suspected cases to 153,692 since 15 March. Concurrently, diagnostic laboratories confirmed 75 new cases within the same day, lifting the total number of verified infections to 18,726.
Healthcare facilities across the country continue to manage a heavy caseload. Hospital admissions for individuals suffering from measles-related complications have reached a cumulative total of 134,437 since the outbreak’s onset. Encouragingly, the vast majority of patients have recovered successfully, with 129,437 individuals discharged from medical facilities after receiving necessary treatment.
Geographical distribution figures for the latest twenty-four-hour period reveal that the five reported deaths involving measles symptoms were concentrated in two specific regions. Three of the deceased patients hailed from the Dhaka division, while the remaining two were recorded in the Sylhet division. Health officials recorded zero direct fatalities from confirmed measles during this specific daily cycle, though vigilance remains high as medical teams work to contain community transmission and encourage vaccination coverage.
