Chelsea Open Talks to Sign Aston Villa Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez

Chelsea have opened formal negotiations with Aston Villa to secure the transfer of World Cup-winning Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, according to sources cited by ESPN. If negotiations reach a successful conclusion, the experienced shot-stopper is expected to replace Robert Sánchez as the primary choice between the posts at Stamford Bridge.
Aston Villa are open to facilitating Martínez’s departure following their acquisition of Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Villa’s long-term strategy focuses on developing Suzuki into their first-choice goalkeeper. Sensing an opportunity, Chelsea are eager to capitalise on the situation and finalize a deal before the summer transfer window closes.
Sánchez’s position in Chelsea’s starting lineup came under severe scrutiny following a disappointing performance in Monday’s 3-2 defeat against Fulham. His errors during the match exposed persistent vulnerabilities in defence, prompting the coaching staff to reconsider their options. The club had initially contemplated handing an opportunity to 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who spent last season on loan at Strasbourg. However, the prospect of recruiting a seasoned Premier League veteran like Martínez has reshaped Chelsea’s recruitment priorities.
From Villa’s perspective, sanctioning Martínez’s sale aligns with a broader strategy to lower the average age of their squad. The 31-year-old Argentine arrived at Villa Park from Arsenal in 2020 for a fee of £17 million, establishing himself as a reliable presence. Nevertheless, compliance with UEFA regulations and Premier League Financial Fair Play rules has made player sales essential for the Midlands club this summer to balance their accounts.
Villa are actively seeking to raise substantial capital through player departures. Morgan Rogers is on the verge of completing a £117 million transfer to Chelsea, while midfield duo Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne are also nearing exits, highlighting the financial restructuring under way at the club.
Meanwhile, developments surrounding Chelsea’s midfield remain equally active. Manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on Wednesday that despite ongoing speculation regarding his future, he expects Enzo Fernández to feature in the upcoming fixture against Luton Town.
Manchester City retain a keen interest in signing the Argentine midfielder. Chelsea have placed a price tag of £120 million (approximately $163 million) on Fernández as rumors of a potential move to the Etihad Stadium continue to circulate. While Alonso publicly expressed full confidence in Fernández’s abilities, he stopped short of ruling out a departure before the transfer window shuts.
