An investigation into a reported traffic accident on the outskirts of Ahmedabad has uncovered a premeditated honour killing, leading to the arrest of a father and son. Sofia, a 22-year-old hospital receptionist, was initially believed to have died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run collision on 12 August. However, detailed forensic examination and inconsistencies in eyewitness accounts led local detectives to uncover a plot orchestrated by her immediate family.
The motive stems from a social media clip involving Sofia and an acquaintance, which circulated online approximately three months prior to her death. Believing the footage brought social disgrace upon their household, her father, Mohammad Farooq, and her 38-year-old brother, Mohammad Habil, allegedly plotted her murder under the guise of restoring family honour.
On the night of the incident, Farooq and Habil persuaded Sofia to join them on a motorcycle ride. Investigators established that Habil hid an iron hammer inside his trousers before leaving their residence. The duo navigated towards an isolated dirt track near Gehaljipura village, far from public view. Once at the secluded location, Habil struck his sister on the head three times with the weapon, inflicting fatal skull fractures.
To mask the crime, the perpetrators dragged Sofia’s unconscious body to a nearby main road and intentionally damaged their motorcycle to simulate a collision. Habil subsequently alerted emergency services, claiming an unidentified, speeding vehicle had rammed their motorcycle from behind near the Gehaljipura junction, injuring them both. Sofia was rushed to Sola Civil Hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Traffic police probing the reported hit-and-run quickly noticed sharp discrepancies between the physical evidence at the scene and the family’s testimony. Blood spatter patterns, the nature of the head trauma, and the specific damage to the vehicle failed to align with a high-speed road collision.
Under sustained interrogation, the suspect’s narrative unravelled. Police subsequently arrested Mohammad Farooq and Mohammad Habil on charges of murder, conspiracy, and destroying evidence. Both suspects remain in judicial custody as prosecutors prepare the formal charge sheet.
Honour-based violence remains a persistent issue in parts of South Asia, where female family members are targeted for actions perceived as violating conservative social norms. Legal experts emphasize that online harassment and unconsented digital distribution often exacerbate these risks, leaving young women particularly vulnerable to severe domestic abuse.
