A madrasa teacher has been detained by police in Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar upazila following allegations that he severely assaulted a student at a religious educational institution.
The incident reportedly took place at Krishnanagar Ashraful Ulum Hafizia Madrasa in the upazila. The accused teacher has been identified as Mufti Ibrahim, whose home is in Birampur village of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila. Police later took him to Nabinagar Police Station after local residents reportedly confined him at the madrasa amid growing anger over the alleged assault.
The student, identified as Abdullah, was allegedly subjected to physical abuse after returning to the madrasa following a period of leave. Photographs and videos purportedly showing the student after the incident have circulated on social media, prompting widespread criticism and concern among local residents.
According to people familiar with the incident, Abdullah had gone home on leave on the day of the alleged assault. He was subsequently sent back to the madrasa in connection with a family matter. After returning to the institution, he was allegedly beaten by the teacher.
At one point, the student’s cries reportedly drew the attention of people living nearby. They went to the scene and found the student in an injured condition. He was subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment.
News of the incident quickly spread through the area. A number of local residents gathered at the madrasa and reportedly confined Mufti Ibrahim, creating a tense situation on the premises. Police were informed and arrived at the institution to bring the situation under control. Officers then took the teacher into custody and brought him to the police station.
Madrasa superintendent Mufti Mahiuddin Ashrafi said he reached the scene at around 8:20am after learning about the incident. He said the condition of the injured student distressed him and that he immediately arranged for Abdullah to receive medical treatment.
“Abdullah is a very good boy. Such disgraceful and inhumane treatment of him cannot be accepted in any way,” Ashrafi said.
Nabinagar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rajib Kanti Nath confirmed that police had taken the teacher to the station after finding him confined by local residents.
He said the police responded after receiving information that the teacher had been surrounded by members of the local community. Officers went to the madrasa, rescued him from the situation and took him to the police station.
The police official added that if a formal complaint is received, the allegations will be investigated and further legal action will be taken according to the findings.
The incident has drawn attention to allegations of physical punishment in educational institutions and the responsibility of teachers to ensure students’ safety. However, the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, as well as the extent of the student’s injuries, will need to be established through investigation and medical assessment.
