A school teacher has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by a court in Chapainawabganj after being found guilty of attempting to rape and molesting a female student. Judge Md Mynuddin Hira of the Chapainawabganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday, 5 October.
The convict, 54-year-old Md Golam Kabir, is the son of the late Tajebul Haq from Satrajitpur (Kathaliapara) village in Shibganj upazila. Kabir served as a physical education and health teacher at Satrajitpur High School.
Court documents and the case statement reveal that Kabir had been harassing the tenth-grade student with inappropriate advances and illicit propositions over an extended period. On the day of the incident, he instructed the girl to meet him at the school premises in the afternoon under the pretext of handing over a biology textbook.
Once she arrived, Kabir lured her into the office room of the Teacher-Employee Welfare Trust on the campus and attempted to rape her by force. Hearing the student’s desperate cries for help, local residents and passers-by rushed to the scene. Finding the office locked from the inside, they broke down the doors and windows to rescue the girl and detain the teacher.
Alerted by locals, a police team from the Shibganj station arrived promptly, took Kabir into custody, and initiated formal legal proceedings.
Following a thorough investigation and the submission of a charge sheet, the court heard witness testimonies before reaching its decision.
Confirming the judgment, prosecution lawyer M Abdus Salam stated that the charges against Kabir were conclusively proven under Section 10 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. In addition to the five-year rigorous prison sentence, the tribunal imposed a fine of 5,000 taka on the convict. Should Kabir fail to pay the penalty, he will be required to serve an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
Law enforcement officers escorted the convicted teacher from the courtroom directly to the district jail following the announcement of the verdict.
