Police in Dinajpur have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly selling his four-month-old nephew to human traffickers to cover personal pocket expenses. Officers from the Parbatipur Model Police Station successfully rescued the infant unharmed and reunited him with his parents following a swift law enforcement operation.
The suspect, identified as Jiarul Islam, son of Monowar Islam from the Chandrapur Hafezpara area in Parbatipur upazila, was presented before a Dinajpur court on the afternoon of Monday, 5 October. The presiding judge ordered him to be remanded to prison pending further legal proceedings.
The rescued infant, Mahim Islam Anas, is the son of Al Amin Islam and Monira Begum, residents of Nemtara village in Dinajpur Sadar upazila.
According to police sources and family members, Monira Begum had recently visited her paternal home in Chandrapur Hafezpara accompanied by her baby. Late on Saturday night, 3 October, Islam quietly abducted the sleeping child from the bed and handed him over to an organised human trafficking syndicate operating in the region.
When the family woke up the following morning to find the bed empty, a frantic search commenced across the village. Unable to trace the infant’s whereabouts, the distressed parents lodged a formal complaint at the Parbatipur Model Police Station.
Acting on the complaint, a police squad launched a targeted raid on Sunday night, 4 October, leading to Islam’s arrest. During interrogation, he disclosed the location where the baby had been taken, enabling law enforcement officers to recover the infant safely.
Officer-in-Charge of Parbatipur Model Police Station, Abdul Wadud, confirmed that Islam confessed to selling his nephew for 60,000 taka simply to secure personal spending money. Wadud added that Islam had not yet received the full payment from the buyers at the time of his arrest.
Following the rescue, the infant’s father, Al Amin Islam, filed a formal case under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, naming Islam and four other individuals as accused. Police drives are currently underway across Dinajpur to apprehend the remaining members of the trafficking ring.
