Taskin Ahmed Calls for Batting Revival After Zimbabwe Defeat

Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed believes his side should have chased down Zimbabwe’s target of 272 after a disappointing batting display led to a 99-run defeat in Abu Dhabi. Despite a promising start with the ball, Bangladesh failed to sustain the momentum and were dismissed for 172, leaving their hopes of reaching the tri-nation series final hanging in the balance.

Taskin expressed his frustration after the match, pointing to Bangladesh’s inability to build partnerships as a major reason for the defeat. In his view, the conditions offered a realistic opportunity to chase the total, but repeated mistakes with the bat prevented the team from mounting a serious challenge.

“Unfortunately, we could not build a single partnership. Just one partnership could have turned the game around. We often make mistakes in our batting. At least there is some consistency in our bowling. The batters should have won the match, but they failed to do so,” Taskin said after the match.

His remarks highlighted a familiar problem for Bangladesh: the difficulty of maintaining composure and building momentum when chasing a substantial target. In one-day cricket, partnerships are often the foundation of a successful run chase. Even when wickets fall early, a sustained stand can ease the pressure, keep the required run rate manageable and give the team a chance to regain control.

Against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh were unable to establish that platform. The loss of wickets disrupted the innings, and the team eventually fell well short of the target. For Taskin, the result was particularly disappointing because he believed the pitch was conducive to a competitive chase.

Reflecting on the conditions in Abu Dhabi, the fast bowler said Bangladesh had experienced first-hand how small mistakes could be punished while bowling. He felt the same surface should have allowed his team to challenge Zimbabwe’s total more effectively.

“Honestly, given the kind of pitch we had today, we bowled on it ourselves. Even a slight error could be punished. A target of at least 270 against Zimbabwe was certainly chaseable. They have put Australia under pressure in their own conditions as well. We should have chased this total in these conditions, but we simply did not play well,” he said.

Taskin’s assessment was not an attempt to diminish Zimbabwe’s achievement. Rather, it reflected his belief that Bangladesh had failed to make proper use of the opportunities available to them. Zimbabwe managed to defend their total convincingly, while Bangladesh’s batters struggled to respond with the consistency and discipline required.

The defeat has placed additional pressure on Bangladesh as they seek to secure a place in the final of the tri-nation series. Their last group-stage match, against Afghanistan on 21 October, will be crucial. Bangladesh must produce a strong performance and improve their net run rate to remain in contention for the final, scheduled for 23 October.

Depending on the standings and the results of other matches, a victory alone may not be enough. The margin of victory could prove decisive, making a disciplined approach with the bat and ball essential. Bangladesh will need to balance the urgency of scoring quickly with the need to preserve wickets and build partnerships.

The team’s batting approach is likely to come under particular scrutiny following the defeat by Zimbabwe. Chasing a target of 272 requires a clear plan, sound judgement and the ability to adapt as the innings develops. Losing wickets in clusters can quickly turn a manageable target into a difficult one, even when the conditions initially appear favourable.

Bangladesh must therefore address the weaknesses exposed in Abu Dhabi before facing Afghanistan. The batters will need to show greater patience, rotate the strike effectively and avoid the mistakes that allowed Zimbabwe to maintain control. A more coordinated effort across the batting order could give the side a better chance of achieving the result it needs.

Despite the setback, Taskin remains hopeful that Bangladesh can recover. He believes the team still has an opportunity to reach the final if it responds positively in the remaining fixture.

“We still have one match left. We will try to fight hard, make a comeback and qualify for the final,” he said.

Bangladesh now have little room for error. The defeat has underlined the importance of consistency across all departments, but it has also left the team with a clear objective: improve the batting performance, compete more effectively under pressure and keep the ambition of reaching the final alive. Afghanistan will provide the next test of whether Bangladesh can turn their disappointment into a determined response.
