The Asia Cup Hockey Championship is set to commence on 29 August in Rajgir, India. However, traditional rivals Pakistan will not be participating. Citing security concerns, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has officially withdrawn from the tournament at the eleventh hour.
According to an official from Hockey India, who confirmed the matter to the Indian daily The Hindu on Wednesday, the PHF has submitted a formal notification to the Asian Hockey Federation, stating that they are pulling out due to apprehensions regarding player safety on Indian soil.
In anticipation of this development, Bangladesh has been invited to participate as a replacement team, the Hockey India official added.
Background of Diplomatic Strain
India and Pakistan have long endured diplomatic tensions, and doubts surrounding Pakistan’s participation in the tournament have lingered since the beginning. Despite early speculation, the Indian government had clarified in July that there would be no obstruction to Pakistan’s involvement in the event.
Nevertheless, Pakistan requested a change of venue and later applied for visas. The Pakistani government eventually declared that no team would travel to India without a formal written security assurance from the Indian authorities
Potential Ramifications
This decision may have implications for the upcoming Junior Hockey World Cup, scheduled to be held later this year in Chennai and Madurai, India.
Tariq Bugti, President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, stated:
“Given the current scenario, our players do not feel safe travelling to India. Many players have also expressed reluctance regarding the tour.”
