Abu Haider Roni, known in domestic circles as a left-arm fast bowler, has rewritten the script in the National Cricket League this season. The 30-year-old all-rounder has showcased explosive batting skills, proving that he is a game-changer with the bat just as much as with the ball. His performances have become a talking point for cricket fans across Bangladesh.
Roni’s standout performance came at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium during the league’s final fixture. Representing Mymensingh, he blasted 13 sixes and 10 fours to remain unbeaten on 141 runs off 127 balls against Rajshahi. His innings displayed a rare combination of power, control, and strategic aggression, underlining his transformation from a fast bowler to a dominant batsman.
Despite missing several matches due to national duty with Bangladesh ‘A’ at Hong Kong Sixes and the Asia Cup Rising Stars, Roni still managed to score 32 sixes in just seven innings across four matches. He also hit 31 fours, making it clear that his batting is not just about power-hitting but also timing and placement.
In total, Roni scored 421 runs at an extraordinary average of 105.25 and a strike rate of 116.94. Out of these, 316 runs came purely from boundaries, a testament to his destructive potential. No other batter came close; only four others managed double-digit six counts: Ziaur Rahman (13), Sohag Gazi (12), Soumya Sarkar (12), and Mohammad Naeem Sheikh (10).
Roni’s campaign began with a debut century against Sylhet, scoring 107 not out from number eight with six sixes and ten fours. Against Rangpur, he made 60 unbeaten off 34 balls, continuing his run of extraordinary batting. After a brief hiatus for national duties, he returned to score 97 off 76 balls in the sixth round, narrowly missing another century.
His final round performance against Rajshahi cemented his season-long dominance. Hitting 13 sixes and 10 fours, he scored an unbeaten 141—the highest of his career. However, even this herculean effort was insufficient for Mymensingh, who fell short of Rajshahi’s 428-run target, finishing at 281. Sanjamul Islam’s left-arm spin, claiming five wickets in each innings, was decisive in Rajshahi’s win.
Abu Haider Roni’s emergence as a powerful all-rounder is the defining story of this National League season. His record-breaking sixes, high strike rate, and consistent performances mark him as one of the most exciting talents in Bangladesh cricket today. His season is proof that a bowler can truly become a batsman capable of game-changing innings, earning him acclaim far beyond his original role.
