Today, 25 February, Bangladesh solemnly observed National Martyrs’ Day, paying tribute to the military officers and their families who perished in the 2009 Pilkhana tragedy. The day marks a profound moment of national reflection on one of the darkest chapters in the country’s recent history.

President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarek Rahman led the official commemoration at the military cemetery in Banani, Dhaka. At precisely 10:10 a.m., President Shahabuddin laid a floral wreath at the memorial dedicated to the fallen officers. Moments later, Prime Minister Rahman joined the ceremony, offering prayers and participating in a solemn programme honouring the martyrs.

A ceremonial guard of honour, performed by a contingent of the armed forces, accompanied by the mournful sound of the bugle, lent a poignant gravity to the occasion. Both the President and Prime Minister observed a moment of silence, reflecting on the sacrifices made and praying for the eternal peace of the departed souls.

Following the leaders, other dignitaries paid their respects, including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Admiral M. Nazmul Hasan, and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan. Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Public Security Division, the Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh, and family members of the martyrs also participated, reinforcing the nation’s collective homage.

The Pilkhana tragedy unfolded on 25 February 2009 at the headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh), when a violent mutiny led to the deaths of 57 army officers, including the then Director General, Major General Shakil Ahmed. Altogether, 74 lives were lost, including officers’ family members, leaving a lasting scar on the nation’s consciousness.

A concise summary of the casualties is as follows:

Since last year, 25 February has been officially designated as National Martyrs’ Day, serving as a solemn occasion for remembrance, state homage, and prayers for the departed. In a special message, Prime Minister Rahman emphasised the nation’s enduring respect for the officers, affirming that their courage and sacrifice remain an enduring legacy.

Today’s commemoration stands as a poignant reminder of the state’s and citizens’ unwavering commitment to honour those who displayed the highest valor, ensuring that the memory of the Pilkhana martyrs continues to inspire generations to come.
