Amid the increasing presence of US military forces in the region, Tehran is adopting a firmer stance in nuclear negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has indicated that any nuclear agreement with the United States would come with specific conditions, stressing that such a deal would reflect Iran’s diplomatic priorities and national interests.
In a statement posted on social media, Araghchi emphasised that a constructive diplomatic approach could pave the way for a nuclear agreement with Washington. However, he was unequivocal that Iran would never deny its citizens access to peaceful nuclear technology.
“Iran will never relinquish its right to the benefits of nuclear energy for our people,” Araghchi said. “Diplomacy must be prioritised, and only then can a fair and balanced agreement be achieved.”
The Iranian government has confirmed that previous discussions in Oman had yielded a framework of mutual understanding. Building on this foundation, both nations are set to resume talks in Geneva. Araghchi described Tehran’s approach as resolute, aimed at securing a just and sustainable agreement within a short timeframe.
He reiterated Iran’s core position: the country will never pursue nuclear weapons, but it will also safeguard its citizens’ right to peaceful nuclear technology.
Araghchi further highlighted the potential historic significance of a successful deal. “There is an unprecedented opportunity before us to address mutual concerns while ensuring the interests of both sides. The deal is within reach, but the condition is clear: diplomacy must take precedence.”
| Aspect | Iran’s Position | United States’ General Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Nuclear Weapons | Will never develop nuclear weapons | Seeks non-proliferation guarantees |
| Peaceful Nuclear Energy | Right to continue for civilian use | Supports civilian nuclear programs under strict oversight |
| Diplomacy | Must be the top priority | Open to negotiations based on prior frameworks |
| Timing | Aims for a swift, balanced agreement | Prefers phased approach with verification mechanisms |
| Previous Talks | Oman discussions yielded understanding | Confirms readiness to resume in Geneva |
The renewed talks come at a time of heightened regional tensions, with Iran signalling a cautious but determined willingness to engage. Analysts suggest that Tehran’s conditional approach seeks to balance its domestic and international interests while sending a clear message that any agreement must respect both its sovereignty and its people’s right to nuclear energy.
By tying diplomacy directly to the conditions of the agreement, Iran is asserting itself as an active negotiator rather than a passive participant, signalling that while compromise is possible, it will never come at the cost of its national priorities.
