Mexican security forces have executed a highly sophisticated operation deep within the rugged jungles of Jalisco, resulting in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, the country’s most infamous drug lord. Authorities described the mission as unprecedented in both planning and execution, departing from conventional tactics focused solely on drug routes or financial surveillance. Instead, investigators tracked El Mencho through his romantic partner, ultimately locating his hidden cabin in the mountainous terrain of Tapalpa.

Officials confirmed that the woman had accompanied El Mencho to the remote location, where he had reportedly been in hiding for at least a week.

Operation and Confrontation

The security operation began on the morning of Sunday, 22 February 2026. As elite forces approached, El Mencho attempted to escape, sparking a violent firefight with his personal bodyguards. Initial reports indicate that at least eight cartel members were killed during the confrontation.

El Mencho, gravely wounded alongside two of his guards, was airlifted to a hospital in Guadalajara. Tragically, all three succumbed to their injuries en route, and their bodies were subsequently transported to Mexico City.

Nationwide Violence Erupts

News of El Mencho’s demise rapidly unleashed waves of violence across Mexico. Reports from security agencies indicate attacks by cartel affiliates in 20 of the nation’s 32 states, targeting highways, vehicles, banks, and security personnel. Within hours, at least 62 fatalities were recorded.

Citizens and tourists found themselves stranded on multiple travel routes, while social media footage captured plumes of smoke rising over several urban centres. Tapalpa’s mayor described the situation as “completely out of control,” a stark contrast to the city’s usual reputation as a tranquil tourist destination.

El Mencho: Criminal Legacy

El Mencho broke from the Sinaloa Cartel almost 15 years ago to establish the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), an organisation heavily involved in drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and human trafficking. The United States Department of State had previously offered a USD 15 million reward for information leading to his capture.

General Ricardo Treviño Trejo, Mexico’s Defence Minister, lauded the courage of the security forces in a press conference, emphasising that the operation marked a significant blow to organised crime. Authorities hailed the mission as a tactical triumph, highlighting the precision and skill of Mexico’s security apparatus.

While sporadic violence erupted nationwide following the operation, by Monday afternoon, stability had largely returned. Security forces continue to patrol Tapalpa and surrounding regions, working to restore full public safety.

The operation has been widely viewed as a testament to Mexico’s growing operational sophistication in confronting some of its most dangerous criminal threats.
