In a breathtaking display of power and precision, England captain Harry Brook single-handedly steered his team to a dramatic victory over Pakistan, securing a semi-final berth in the T20 World Cup. What began as a challenging chase turned into a historic night as Brook’s destructive batting etched his name into cricketing history.
At Pallekele International Stadium on Tuesday evening, Pakistan had set a competitive target of 164 runs after electing to bat first. Despite a spirited middle-order effort, England chased the total with five balls to spare, thanks to Brook’s sensational innings.
Brook’s knock of 100 runs off just 51 balls marked the first-ever T20 World Cup century by an England captain. The previous record for a captain in the tournament was held by Chris Gayle, who had scored 98 runs. Brook reached his century in 50 balls, making it the second-fastest T20 World Cup century in history, following Gayle’s 47-ball effort against England in 2016.
The innings also propelled Brook into an elite group, making him England’s third cricketer to score centuries across all three international formats, joining Jos Buttler and David Malan. In T20 World Cup history, he became the third English batter to hit a century, after Buttler and Alex Hales.
For Pakistan, the defeat was crushing. With one abandoned match and one loss, they now face a must-win scenario in their remaining fixture, while also keeping an eye on other results. England, in contrast, have won both of their Super Eight matches and became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals, extending their streak to five consecutive T20 World Cup semi-finals, the highest in the tournament’s history.
England’s chase had a shaky start, losing three wickets for just 35 runs in the powerplay, with Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, and Jacob Bethell dismissed early. Brook, promoted to number three for the first time in his T20 career, steadied the innings with a brisk 50 off 27 balls, before accelerating to his historic century.
Though dismissed immediately after reaching three figures by Shaheen Shah Afridi, Brook’s innings had already set the platform for victory. Only Will Jacks (28 off 23) and Sam Curran (16 off 15) managed double-digit scores alongside Brook.
For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi’s four-wicket haul for 30 runs stood out, while Usman Tariq took 2 wickets for 31. Earlier, Sahibzada Farhan top-scored with 63 off 45 balls, his second half-century of the tournament, remaining Pakistan’s highest run-scorer with 283 runs from five innings. Fakhar Zaman (25 off 16), Babar Azam (25 off 24), and Shadab Khan (23 off 11) offered resistance, but it was insufficient.
| Team | Batter | Runs | Balls | Strike Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| England | Harry Brook | 100 | 51 | 196.1 |
| England | Will Jacks | 28 | 23 | 121.7 |
| England | Sam Curran | 16 | 15 | 106.7 |
| Pakistan | Sahibzada Farhan | 63 | 45 | 140.0 |
| Pakistan | Fakhar Zaman | 25 | 16 | 156.3 |
| Pakistan | Babar Azam | 25 | 24 | 104.2 |
| Pakistan | Shadab Khan | 23 | 11 | 209.1 |
With this emphatic victory, England have demonstrated their dominance over Pakistan in the current T20 World Cup, winning all four encounters against them in this edition and the last six meetings overall. The stage is now set for an enthralling semi-final, with Brook’s masterclass at the heart of England’s charge.
