Amidst the high-octane drama of the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially unveiled the schedule for the 10th edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The announcement has set the stage for a historic summer of cricket in England, though the draw has been far from kind to the Bangladesh national side.
The "Tigresses" have been placed in Group 1, a collection of teams that pundits are already labeling the "Group of Death." Bangladesh will find themselves competing against the most decorated side in the history of the women’s game, Australia, as well as the 2024 runners-up, South Africa. Adding to the intensity of the group stage are the high-stakes subcontinental derbies against India and Pakistan, alongside the tournament debutants, the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Group 2 features the hosts England, alongside defending champions New Zealand, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Scotland.
The tournament is scheduled to commence on 12 June 2026 at the iconic Edgbaston stadium in Birmingham, where the hosts will face Sri Lanka. The month-long festival of cricket will culminate in a grand finale at Lord’s on 12 July.
For Bangladesh, this tournament represents a seminal moment as it marks their first-ever opportunity to play international cricket on English soil. Their campaign begins on 14 June against the Netherlands, followed by a daunting encounter with the Australian powerhouse at Headingley.
| Date | Opponent | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 14 June | Netherlands | Edgbaston, Birmingham |
| 17 June | Australia | Headingley, Leeds |
| 20 June | Pakistan | Utilita Bowl, Southampton |
| 25 June | India | Old Trafford, Manchester |
| 28 June | South Africa | Lord’s, London |
Captain Nigar Sultana Joty expressed a mixture of nervous energy and profound pride regarding the upcoming tour. Speaking to the ICC, she noted:
"We have never had the privilege of playing in England before, so the excitement within the squad is palpable. We are under no illusions regarding the magnitude of the challenge ahead, but we are impatient to step out onto these world-class stages. Our goal is to prepare meticulously, play our finest cricket, and secure victories for our nation."
With the chance to play at historic venues like Old Trafford and the "Home of Cricket," Lord’s, the Bangladesh side will be looking to translate their recent improvements in the shortest format into a giant-killing run in the United Kingdom.
