Bangladesh Dengue Death Toll Reaches 371 After Three More Fatalities

Bangladesh has recorded three more deaths from dengue fever in the past 24 hours, raising the country’s total number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease to 371 this year.

During the same period, another 1,299 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, highlighting the continuing burden of dengue infections on the national healthcare system.

The latest figures were disclosed in a dengue situation report issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The report covered the 24-hour period from 8 am on Thursday to 8 am on Friday.

According to the DGHS, the total number of patients admitted to hospitals with dengue since the beginning of the year has reached 119,801. Of these, 112,111 have been discharged following treatment.

The figures indicate that a substantial number of patients have recovered sufficiently to leave hospital, although new infections requiring hospitalisation and further deaths continue to be reported.

Of the three latest fatalities, two were recorded in Chattogram Division, while the remaining death occurred in an area outside the Mymensingh City Corporation.

The deceased included two children and one woman. The deaths of two children have renewed concerns about the risks associated with dengue, particularly among younger patients who may develop serious complications.

Dengue is a viral disease transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It remains a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh, particularly during periods when rainfall and accumulated water create favourable conditions for mosquito breeding.

Common symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea and fatigue. While many patients recover with appropriate medical care, some develop severe complications that require urgent hospital treatment.

Severe dengue can cause internal bleeding, dangerously low blood pressure and damage to vital organs. Medical guidance stresses the importance of recognising warning signs early, as a patient’s condition can deteriorate rapidly, sometimes when the fever begins to subside.

Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, breathing difficulties and extreme weakness are among the symptoms that require immediate medical assessment.

Preventing dengue transmission depends heavily on controlling the Aedes mosquito population and reducing opportunities for the insects to breed.

Standing water in flowerpots, discarded containers, tyres, rooftop areas and other household surroundings can provide breeding sites for mosquitoes. Regular cleaning and the removal of accumulated water are therefore essential preventive measures.

People are also advised to protect themselves from mosquito bites by using suitable repellents, wearing protective clothing and taking appropriate precautions indoors and outdoors.

The latest hospital admission figures demonstrate the scale of the continuing dengue challenge. With nearly 120,000 hospital admissions recorded this year, the disease remains a serious concern for both healthcare providers and the wider population.

The deaths of two children and one woman during the latest reporting period underline the importance of early diagnosis, timely medical treatment and effective mosquito-control measures.

As Bangladesh continues to record new dengue cases and fatalities, sustained public awareness, preventive action and access to appropriate healthcare remain crucial to reducing the impact of the disease.
