Bangladesh Guitarist Russell Khan Dies at 52

Russell Khan, a prominent guitarist who spent more than three decades contributing to Bangladesh’s music scene, has died at the age of 52. He passed away at his elder sister’s residence in Banani, Dhaka, on Thursday morning, bringing an end to a career spent performing alongside many of the country’s leading singers.

Khan had reportedly been suffering from dengue and chikungunya for several days. On Thursday morning, he suddenly collapsed in the bathroom of his sister’s home. A doctor was called to examine him and subsequently declared him dead. According to the doctor, he died of a stroke.

Throughout his career, Khan worked with many of Bangladesh’s leading musicians, accompanying singers during live performances and contributing to the musical arrangements that shaped their stage presentations. His guitar playing became a familiar feature of performances by established artists, earning him recognition within the country’s music community.

Although he was best known as a guitarist, Khan occasionally performed as a vocalist. His career reflected the important role instrumentalists play in live music, where guitarists provide rhythm, melody and musical depth to complement a singer’s voice. While such musicians may not always occupy centre stage, their contributions are often essential to the overall quality and atmosphere of a performance.

Over more than 30 years, Khan built his professional life around music, working with a wide range of established performers. His experience and versatility enabled him to contribute to different stage presentations, making him a familiar figure among fellow musicians. His passing marks the loss of an experienced instrumentalist whose work formed part of numerous live musical performances in Bangladesh.

Khan’s final stage appearance took place on 13 October at an event in Manikganj, where he played guitar. The performance was his last before his sudden death. His passing has brought an abrupt end to a long musical journey that had continued until only days before his death.

His death also highlights the contribution of professional guitarists and other instrumentalists to Bangladesh’s music industry. Behind many memorable live performances is the work of musicians who support singers, maintain the rhythm and help create the distinctive sound of each song. Khan spent much of his career in that role, working alongside leading artists and helping bring their performances to life.

Khan’s funeral prayer was held at a mosque in Banani at 3.30 pm on Thursday. Following the prayer, his body was taken to his ancestral home in Bikrampur, where he was expected to be buried in the family graveyard.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His death is a personal loss for his family and a sad moment for colleagues who worked with him throughout his career.

Though much of his professional life was spent accompanying other artists rather than performing in the spotlight, Khan made a lasting contribution through his musicianship and years of dedication to his craft. His guitar playing was an integral part of his work, and his association with numerous singers ensured that his music reached audiences across different live performances.

With his death, Bangladesh’s music community has lost a seasoned guitarist whose career spanned more than three decades. His final performance in Manikganj on 13 October now stands as the last chapter of a musical journey that began many years ago and ended unexpectedly at the age of 52.
