The inaugural edition of the SAFF Futsal Championship for both men and women is currently underway in Bangkok, Thailand. On Wednesday (14 January), Bangladesh’s men’s team played out a thrilling 4-4 draw against India. However, in the women’s division, Bangladesh’s team demonstrated clear superiority over their Indian counterparts.
On Thursday (15 January), at the Huamark Indoor Stadium, Bangladesh’s women’s team defeated India 3-1, marking an emphatic start to the tournament. The match’s standout performer was team captain Sabina Khatun, who scored twice to set Bangladesh on course for victory.
In the first half, Sabina’s brace put Bangladesh 2-0 ahead, establishing early control. India mounted a determined comeback in the second half, creating several goal-scoring opportunities. However, Bangladesh goalkeeper Jhilik made a series of crucial saves, preventing India from closing the gap. Midway through the second half, Bangladesh extended their lead through a swift counter-attack finished by Sumaiya Matsushima, taking the score to 3-0. Although India managed to score a consolation goal in the closing minutes, it was insufficient to overturn Bangladesh’s advantage.
This victory is significant not only for the team’s confidence but also for marking Bangladesh’s return to international women’s futsal after seven years. The last time Bangladesh’s women’s team competed in a continental futsal event was in 2018, also in Thailand, during the Asian Futsal qualifiers.
| Team | Goals | Key Scorers | Half/Time of Goals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh | 3 | Sabina Khatun (2), Sumaiya Matsushima (1) | First half & second half |
| India | 1 | Unknown | Second half |
Bangladesh’s victory was underpinned by cohesive teamwork, a solid defensive line, and strategic counter-attacks. Sabina’s leadership on the field and Jhilik’s goalkeeping were pivotal in thwarting India’s offensive efforts. Other players contributed effectively in both attack and defence, ensuring the team maintained control throughout the match.
With this strong start, Bangladesh’s women’s team now aims to maintain momentum and pursue the championship title. The win has boosted the team’s morale and reaffirmed their capability on the international futsal stage, signalling a promising campaign ahead in the tournament.
