Bangladesh national team midfielder Shomit Shom has officially parted ways with Canadian professional football club Cavalry FC, ending a three-year association. On Wednesday, 14 January, the club confirmed the release of the 28-year-old midfielder through an official announcement on their website. Alongside Shom, Cavalry FC also released fellow player Diego Gutierrez.
The decision comes as both players’ contracts reached their natural conclusion, with Cavalry FC opting not to renew. In their statement, the club expressed gratitude for Shom’s contributions and extended best wishes for his future career.
Shomit joined Cavalry FC in 2023 and quickly became a key figure in the squad, especially in defensive and central midfield roles. During his tenure, he appeared in 79 competitive matches, registering four assists, although he did not score any goals himself. His influence on the pitch, however, extended beyond statistics, providing stability and experience to the team.
| Year | Competition | Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Canadian Premier League (CPL) Shield | Champions |
| 2024 | North Star Cup | Champions |
In addition to team achievements, Shom earned individual recognition. Known for his consistent performances, he was named CPL Player of the Week multiple times and was regularly included in the CPL Team of the Week. His performances in Canada’s domestic league established him as one of South Asia’s most recognised footballers abroad.
Internationally, Shom has also made his mark. He debuted for the Bangladesh national team in June last year during the AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Singapore. To date, he has played five international matches, scoring one goal. That goal came on 13 November at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka against Hong Kong, equalising in extra time, although Bangladesh ultimately lost the match.
Currently without a club, Shom’s next move remains a topic of interest for fans and analysts alike. His departure from Cavalry FC, while part of standard contract procedures, marks the end of a memorable chapter for both player and club. His contributions during a period of domestic and international success will be fondly remembered in Cavalry FC’s history.
Shom’s career trajectory now enters a new phase, and Bangladeshi football fans are watching closely to see where this talented midfielder will continue his professional journey.
