In an unprecedented showdown within Bangladeshi cricket, the nation’s professional players have issued a stark ultimatum: the immediate resignation of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Director M. Nazmul Islam, or a total cessation of all cricketing activities. The announcement, made by Mohammad Mithun, President of the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), sets a deadline of 1:00 pm tomorrow—just moments before the scheduled start of the next Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) fixture.
The crisis was ignited by a series of derogatory remarks made by Nazmul Islam, who serves as the Chairman of the BCB’s Finance Committee. Tensions have been simmering regarding the national team’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. When questioned about potential compensation for players should the tour be cancelled, Nazmul’s response was seen as deeply condescending.
"If they go and achieve nothing, are we asking them to return the millions we spend on them?" Nazmul reportedly stated. He further exacerbated the situation by questioning the very relevance of the players, remarking, "If the Board itself does not exist, would the cricketers even remain?"
This is not the first time Nazmul has courted controversy. He recently faced severe backlash for a social media post in which he labelled former national captain Tamim Iqbal an "Indian agent." CWAB argues that such language is not only unprofessional but fundamentally damaging to the integrity of the sport.
| Incident | Target | Nature of Comment |
|---|---|---|
| BPL/World Cup Inquiry | All Professional Players | Questioned the value of investment vs performance. |
| Institutional Debate | The Playing Body | Suggested the Board is more vital than the players. |
| Facebook Post | Tamim Iqbal | Labelled the former captain an "Indian agent." |
| General Conduct | The Cricket Community | Used "unacceptable" and "hurtful" language. |
Speaking at a virtual press conference, Mohammad Mithun emphasised that the players' patience has reached its limit. "The choice of words and the tone used by a Director is unacceptable. It has hurt the entire cricketing fraternity," Mithun declared. "If he does not resign before tomorrow's match, we will boycott all forms of cricket."
The timing of this threat is critical. The twelfth edition of the BPL is currently underway, with Noakhali Express set to face Chittagong Royals tomorrow afternoon, followed by an evening clash between Rajshahi Warriors and Sylhet Titans. A strike would throw the high-profile tournament into total disarray.
In an effort to de-escalate the situation, the BCB issued a formal statement distance itself from Nazmul's remarks. The Board clarified that personal comments made by individual directors do not reflect the official stance or values of the BCB. While the Board expressed "sincere regret" for any offence caused, it stopped short of demanding Nazmul’s resignation, leaving the deadlock unbroken as the 1:00 pm deadline looms.
