Bangladesh is set to witness a landmark announcement today as the Election Commission prepares to unveil the schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the concurrent national referendum. Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin will address the nation at 6:00 pm, providing detailed information on the election timetable.

Yesterday, the senior secretary of the Election Commission, Akhtar Ahmed, briefed reporters at the Election Secretariat in Agargaon, Dhaka, confirming the timing of the announcement. He stated that the schedule would cover all 300 parliamentary constituencies, as there have been no significant issues concerning electoral boundaries.

In a traditional precursor to the announcement, the CEC and the full commission met with President Md. Sahabuddin at Bangabhaban on Wednesday afternoon. During the meeting, the Commission provided a comprehensive update on the election preparations, including field-level readiness, law and order, and the political situation. President Sahabuddin pledged full support to ensure a free and fair election. Notably, he agreed with the Commission’s proposal to extend the voting duration by one hour, recognising the logistical challenges posed by the high number of voters.

The political context leading up to this announcement is remarkable. Following widespread protests and student-led movements, the Awami League government fell on 5 August 2024. An interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on 8 August 2024. After 16 months of interim governance, the Election Commission is now poised to formally declare the national election schedule.

The upcoming election is expected to see participation from approximately 127.7 million voters. To manage this immense turnout, 42,766 polling stations have been finalised across the country. Given that the election and the national referendum will take place on the same day, voting hours have been extended by one hour. In addition, two secret booths will be available in each polling station to facilitate efficient voting.

The official announcement is anticipated with great interest, marking the beginning of an extensive electoral process that will shape the nation’s future. Political parties, candidates, and citizens are closely monitoring developments as Bangladesh prepares for one of its most significant democratic exercises.
