Bangladesh Gold Prices Tumble Following Latest Industry Price Adjustment

The Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) has announced a substantial reduction in the price of gold across the domestic market, offering some respite to consumers. The price of high-quality 22-carat gold has been slashed by 2,216 Taka per bhori. Following this decision, a single bhori of 22-carat gold, inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT), will now retail at 221,966 Taka.

The apex body of the country’s jewellery sector disclosed the revised pricing framework through an official press release issued on Monday morning, 13 July 2026. According to the directive, the new rates became legally effective across all retail outlets on the same day from 10:00 am.

BAJUS noted that the downward revision was necessitated by a noticeable decline in the price of pure gold, locally known as tejabi gold, within the domestic bullion market. The organization adjusted the consumer tariffs to mirror these localized market conditions accurately.

Revised Tariffs Across Diverse Carat Classifications

The newly implemented price matrix alters the cost of all standard variations of the precious metal. A standard bhori, which equates to exactly 11.664 grams, will now command different rates depending on its purity.

Under this latest schedule, 21-carat gold is priced at 211,993 Taka per bhori, while 18-carat gold has been adjusted to 182,075 Taka. Traditional or old gold, categorized under the artisanal Sanatan method, has dropped to 148,774 Taka per bhori.

Trade officials clarified that these government-sanctioned baselines will remain mandatory for all operating jewellery establishments until the association elects to issue a subsequent directive. However, standard making charges will vary based on the intricacy of the ornament designs. BAJUS has explicitly instructed retailers that because VAT is fully integrated into the finalized purchase price of gold and silver ornaments, no shopkeeper is authorised to levy any separate VAT charges at the point of sale. Existing policies concerning exchange values and direct repurchases—which exclude manufacturing charges, stone values, and specific taxes—remain entirely unchanged.

This intervention follows a price hike executed just three days prior. On the morning of 10 July, BAJUS had escalated prices by an identical margin of 2,216 Taka, which briefly pushed the price of 22-carat gold to an all-time high of 224,182 Taka. During that short-lived window, 21-carat stood at 214,093 Taka, 18-carat at 183,883 Taka, and Sanatan gold at 150,232 Taka.

High Market Volatility Patterns Persist

The frequent alterations underscore the extreme price volatility that has characterised the domestic trade throughout recent years. Monday’s announcement marks the 90th price adjustment executed by BAJUS within the current calendar year of 2026 alone. Over these ninety iterations, gold prices were increased on 44 occasions, lowered 45 times, and subjected to a singular technical VAT adjustment.

This hyper-reactive pricing mechanism mirrors the patterns recorded during the preceding year. In 2025, the domestic market witnessed a total of 93 distinct price recalibrations, driven primarily by fluctuating international bullion rates and supply chain pressures. The 2025 cycle was distinctly bullish, featuring 64 upward hikes and only 29 downward reductions.

Parallel Price Reductions Extended to Silver

In tandem with the gold market correction, BAJUS has introduced a parallel reduction in the price of silver, easing pressures across the broader white metal trade. The price of 22-carat silver has been reduced by 117 Taka per bhori, bringing its new retail value down to 4,607 Taka.

Concurrently, 21-carat silver is now fixed at 4,374 Taka per bhori, while 18-carat has shifted to 3,791 Taka. Traditional Sanatan silver rounds out the lower end of the table at 2,885 Taka per bhori.

The silver market has displayed similar tendencies toward high volatility. The mid-July adjustment represents the 56th modification of silver pricing within the current year, evenly split between 28 price hikes and 28 price drops. This stands out as a departure from the pricing behavior of 2025, during which silver was adjusted only 13 times, seeing ten increases and just three reductions. Local traders believe these rapid re-evaluations are essential to safeguard domestic merchants from destabilizing losses whilst keeping local consumer spending viable.
