An academic chemist holding a degree in chemical sciences from the University of El Salvador, where he later taught organic chemistry, is set to take charge of one of football’s biggest fixtures. Ivan Barton will step onto the global stage tomorrow night in Dallas to officiate the high-stakes semi-final clash between European giants France and Spain.
The governing body of world football, FIFA, adhered to its traditional scheduling protocol by announcing the official match appointments exactly 24 hours ahead of kick-off. Positioned at the very top of that list as the designated match referee is the 35-year-old Salvadoran scholar. With this high-profile appointment, Barton creates sporting history by becoming the first ever referee from El Salvador to be awarded the whistle for a men’s World Cup semi-final. To ensure structural cohesion, FIFA has flanked him with an all-Salvadoran on-field team, naming David Moran and Antonio Pupiro as assistant referees. Sweden’s Glenn Nyberg will perform fourth official duties, whilst his compatriot Mahbod Beigi serves as the reserve assistant referee.
Born on 27 January 1991 in Santa Ana, the second-largest city in El Salvador, Ivan Archides Barton Cisneros balanced an elite academic trajectory with a passionate commitment to football. Whilst lecturing university students on complex molecular chains by day, he spent his weekends managing domestic football fixtures. His clinical, disciplined approach on the pitch caught international attention, leading to his formal induction onto the FIFA International Referees list in 2018.
Over the last several years, Barton has steadily built an impressive international portfolio. He has successfully officiated high-pressure matches across the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the CONCACAF Nations League, the Olympic Football Tournament, and the Copa América. His steady rise gained momentum during the Qatar World Cup, where he oversaw three matches. Most notably, his authoritative management of the England versus Senegal Round-of-16 tie earned him substantial praise within FIFA’s refereeing committee, cementing the organization’s trust in his analytical capabilities.
This sustained excellence paved the way for his extensive deployment in the current tournament, where the upcoming semi-final will mark his fourth match in charge. However, it was his firm intervention during a fiery group-stage fixture between Paraguay and Turkey that became his most talked-about moment of the summer.
During first-half stoppage time in that match, Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almirón covered his mouth whilst making an undercover remark to Turkish defender Mert Müldür. Müldür instantly alerted the match officials. Displaying characteristic academic precision, Barton consulted the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system and subsequently issued a straight red card to Almirón. The dismissal went viral, standing as the first and only instance in World Cup history where a player was sent off specifically for covered-mouth verbal misconduct. With an official of such meticulous standards managing the upcoming semi-final, superstars like Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal will undoubtedly need to maintain their absolute best behaviour.
