The Bangladesh women’s cricket team commenced their campaign in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a notable six-wicket victory over the Netherlands. In the Group 1 fixture held at Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, the Netherlands won the toss and elected to bat first, registering a total of 139 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their designated 20 overs. The Bangladesh women’s team successfully chased down the target with five balls to spare. Opening batter Jwayria Ferdous contributed the highest individual score for her team, making 50 runs. Her half-century was scored off 33 deliveries and included seven boundaries and two sixes.
The foundation of the successful run chase for Bangladesh was established by a significant opening partnership between Jwayria Ferdous and Dilara Akter, who combined to score 67 runs for the first wicket. This partnership was put together in just 7.5 overs. Out of the 67 runs scored during this opening stand, exactly 50 runs were contributed solely from the bat of Jwayria Ferdous.
The opening partnership was eventually broken in the fifth delivery of the eighth over when Jwayria Ferdous was caught at point off the bowling of Caroline de Lange. Immediately following her dismissal, Bangladesh faced a quick double-blow as the captain, Nigar Sultana, was dismissed for a duck on the very next delivery of the same over.
Following the sudden loss of the two top-order batters in consecutive deliveries, Sharmin Akter joined forces with Shorna Akter to stabilise the innings. The duo put together an unbroken partnership of 56 runs, which safely guided the Bangladesh national team across the victory line. Sharmin Akter remained unbeaten at the crease, scoring 37 runs off 32 deliveries. Her batting partner, Shorna Akter, provided crucial lower-order support, remaining not out on 18 runs, which she compiled from 17 deliveries.
Bangladesh completed the run chase in 19.1 overs, reaching a final score of 141 runs for the loss of four wickets. For her match-defining half-century at the top of the order, opening batter Jwayria Ferdous was officially selected and awarded the Player of the Match accolade by the tournament officials.
Earlier in the match, the Netherlands’ batting innings was anchored by their captain, Babette de Leede, who top-scored for her team with an individual innings of 50 runs. Amongst the other Dutch batters, Silver Siegers made the next notable contribution with 16 runs before the team concluded their 20 overs at 139 for 8.
The bowling attack of Bangladesh was led by pace bowler Marufa Akter, who claimed two wickets while conceding 31 runs in her spell. The remaining wickets were shared among the other bowlers, with Ritu Moni taking 1 wicket for 17 runs, Rabeya Khan securing 1 wicket for 26 runs, Sanjida Akter Meghla claiming 1 wicket for 29 runs, and Fariha Trisna picking up 1 wicket for 32 runs.
