Bappa Mazumder Recalls His First Earnings and Musical Journey

Bangladeshi singer, composer and music director Bappa Mazumder has spent more than three decades in the country’s music industry, establishing himself as one of its recognised and respected figures. Known for his work in band music, solo recordings and film soundtracks, he has built a career shaped by creativity, dedication and years of experience. Yet his journey to success began far from the spotlight, with a guitar and a modest opportunity to perform at a hotel in Dhaka.

Early in his career, Bappa played the guitar at hotels to earn money. It was at the Sonargaon Hotel in the capital that he received his first-ever payment for a musical performance. The experience marked an important milestone in his professional journey. From those early beginnings, he gradually made his way into the mainstream music industry, overcoming various personal and professional challenges along the way.

One of the defining chapters of his career has been his association with the band Dalchhut, which he formed alongside the late musician Sanjeeb Chowdhury. Over the years, the band has developed a distinctive identity within Bangladesh’s music scene. Its contribution to the country’s band music has made it an important part of Bappa’s musical legacy. Dalchhut is set to mark its 30th anniversary this November, celebrating three decades since its formation.

Alongside his work with the band and his solo musical projects, Bappa has also contributed to film music. Although he became involved in the sector nearly 20 years ago, his work in film soundtracks has remained relatively limited compared with his other musical activities.

Explaining why he has not worked more extensively in cinema, Bappa pointed to the importance of professional connections within the film industry. He admitted that maintaining such relationships has never been one of his strengths.

“Film music requires connections. I am rather poor at that. If you cannot maintain those connections, your chances of getting opportunities to work on film songs become limited,” he said.

His remarks offer a personal perspective on the professional realities of working in the film music industry. Securing opportunities can involve more than musical ability alone, as relationships with filmmakers and other industry professionals may also influence access to projects. Bappa’s comments suggest that his limited involvement in film music is partly connected to his reluctance or difficulty in maintaining the professional networks required in that sector.

Recently, the musician appeared on Behind the Fame with RRK, a podcast programme hosted by Rumman Rashid Khan. During the conversation, he shared several lesser-known stories from his personal life and professional career, giving audiences an opportunity to learn more about the experiences behind his public image.

The discussion included memories of his early musical activities, his first professional earnings and the challenges he faced while building a career in the industry. His reflections also offered an insight into the journey of an artist who has remained connected to Bangladesh’s music scene for more than three decades.

For Bappa, the journey from playing guitar at the Sonargaon Hotel to establishing himself as a prominent musician has involved several stages of growth and change. His association with Dalchhut, his work as a composer and music director, and his experiences in film music have all contributed to his professional identity.

The episode of Behind the Fame with RRK is scheduled to air simultaneously on Maasranga Television and Radio Din Raat 93.6 FM at 9pm today. The programme will give viewers and listeners an opportunity to hear Bappa speak candidly about his life, career and the lesser-known experiences that have shaped his musical journey.
