A reported attempt to push seven people from India into Bangladesh through the Tetulbaria border in Meherpur’s Gangni Upazila was thwarted by members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents, according to border authorities and local sources.
The incident occurred at dawn on Saturday near Sub-Pillar 5 of Main Pillar 104 along the border. Following the event, additional BGB personnel were deployed to the area, and security forces were placed on heightened alert.
According to BGB officials and several local residents, members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly attempted to facilitate the entry of seven individuals into Bangladesh through the Hatpara area of Tetulbaria village. The group reportedly consisted of three men, three women and one child.
However, after the movement was detected, BGB personnel and villagers immediately intervened and prevented the individuals from crossing into Bangladeshi territory. As a result, the group was unable to enter Bangladesh and later took up a position near the barbed-wire fence on the Indian side of the border.
Local sources stated that the BSF had opened a gate in the border fencing during the early hours of the morning and directed the individuals towards Bangladesh. When they attempted to move into Bangladeshi territory, resistance from BGB personnel and local residents forced them to retreat. They subsequently returned to the vicinity of the fence.
Residents in the area reported that the individuals have remained near the border barrier. According to the same sources, the BSF has not taken them back into the interior of Indian territory. On the Bangladeshi side, BGB personnel and local villagers have continued to maintain a vigilant presence.
Since the morning, BGB has been using loudspeakers to campaign against any attempted push-in activities and to urge the BSF to take responsibility for the individuals currently positioned near the border fence. Local sources indicated that, as of the latest information available, no positive response had been received from the BSF regarding the matter.
