In an extraordinary turn of events in Chittagong’s Satkania area, a woman named Enni Akter has given birth to five children simultaneously, bringing immense joy to her family and creating a buzz across the country. After struggling with infertility for a decade, Enni and her husband finally celebrated a miraculous breakthrough on the night of Monday, 8 December, when the quintuplets were delivered at People’s Hospital in the city. Among the newborns, three are girls and two are boys, a combination that has added to the uniqueness of the event.
The couple had undergone years of fertility treatments without success. Following medical advice, Enni Akter and her husband opted for intrauterine insemination (IUI), a specialised procedure to assist conception. Despite facing financial constraints, they persevered, covering the significant costs of repeated treatments with sheer determination and hope. Their relentless struggle has now culminated in what doctors describe as an exceptionally rare occurrence: the birth of five children at once.
Currently, all five newborns are under specialised care at the intensive care unit of Park View Hospital. According to attending physicians, the three girls weigh 1.6 kg, 1.5 kg, and 1.4 kg respectively, while the remaining two boys each weigh approximately 1 kg. Because of their low birth weights, the babies are under constant monitoring and are expected to remain in critical care for at least 72 hours to ensure their health stabilises.
Dr. Farida Yasmin Sumi, Assistant Professor at Rangamati Medical College and a renowned infertility specialist, stated that Enni Akter had endured immense emotional pain due to prolonged childlessness. She added that the couple’s marriage had even been on the brink of collapse under the pressure. “Their unwavering commitment to treatment, despite financial hardships, has now resulted in this extraordinary miracle. The simultaneous birth of five healthy babies is a phenomenon that is rarely witnessed,” Dr Sumi explained.
The mother, Enni Akter, is reported to be in good health following the delivery, much to the relief of her family and medical staff. Her husband, who runs a small business in Satkania, expressed a mixture of concern and joy: while he worries about the medical expenses associated with the quintuplets’ care, he is elated at the long-awaited arrival of his children. The family’s story has now captured the attention of local communities and national media, inspiring countless messages of congratulations and support.
