In today’s globalised world, many individuals seek to acquire citizenship in a country other than their own, whether for professional, personal, or lifestyle reasons. One increasingly common route is through marriage to a foreign national, which, in several countries, can expedite the path to citizenship. While the requirements and timelines vary, a number of nations formally allow spouses of their citizens to apply for naturalisation after a certain period of marriage and cohabitation.

Here is an overview of some notable countries that offer citizenship through marriage:

Turkey: Foreign nationals married to Turkish citizens can apply for citizenship after three years of marriage and shared residence. The Turkish passport is highly regarded, allowing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 110 countries worldwide.

Spain: Marriage to a Spanish national permits citizenship application after just one year of cohabitation. Once granted, Spanish citizenship offers opportunities for dual nationality in several Latin American countries as well as some European nations.

Argentina & Mexico: Both Latin American countries allow spouses to apply after two years of marriage. Applicants must present a valid marriage certificate, demonstrate basic Spanish language skills, and maintain a clean legal record.

Switzerland: Known for strict immigration policies, Switzerland provides a relatively straightforward route to citizenship through marriage. If the couple lives in Switzerland, citizenship can be applied for after three years of marriage and a total of five years of residence. For couples living abroad, a six-year-long marriage suffices for eligibility.

Cape Verde: In this West African island nation, spouses of citizens may apply for citizenship immediately, provided the marriage is legally recognised.

Marriage remains a viable route to global mobility, but prospective applicants are advised to understand each country’s legal requirements fully before pursuing citizenship through matrimony.
