Day-Night Test: Key Pacers Return

Published: 25 Nov 2025, 06:31 pm

The Australian camp is focused on Brisbane after the first Ashes Test concluded in just two days. Preparations for the upcoming day-night clash at The Gabba have intensified, with senior pacers Josh Hazelwood and Pat Cummins seen in the nets in Sydney. Their different training routines signal who is likely to feature in the next Test.

Hazelwood’s red-ball practice indicates that he will not play at the Gabba. His focus is on the Adelaide Test, and coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that he will return later in the series depending on the progress of his rehabilitation.

Cummins’ practice with the pink ball points to a strong chance of his selection at the Gabba. His pace, control, and fitness levels have reassured team management, though he still needs to build stamina for a full Test workload.

Excitement around the Gabba is heightened due to the pink-ball conditions. Recent Sheffield Shield night sessions have seen rapid wickets, suggesting that a shorter Test is possible. Backup pacer Michael Neser is ready and experienced, and Xavier Bartlett has impressed with standout performances, including four wickets and 72 runs. Jhye Richardson is also improving his fitness gradually, readying himself for multi-day cricket.

The return of Hazelwood and Cummins will strengthen Australia’s pace attack for the Ashes. Team management must decide the final playing XI, and fans will be keen to see how Australia performs under lights in this pivotal day-night Test. The Gabba Test may well determine the momentum for the remainder of the series.
