Dengue cases in Narayanganj district have registered a sharp increase, causing growing concern among public health officials. Over the first nine months of the current year, the total number of recorded dengue infections across the district reached 1,931. Notably, 612 of those cases were recorded during the first 17 days of September alone, marking the highest monthly surge in infections this year.
Dr S. M. Sakhawat Hossain, Civil Surgeon of Narayanganj district, confirmed the official statistics on Thursday evening, 17 September.
According to data released by the Civil Surgeon’s office, 167 dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment in various government and private healthcare facilities across the district. In the 24 hours leading up to the report, 37 new patients were admitted to local hospitals following positive dengue diagnoses.
The distribution of new hospital admissions highlights the widespread nature of the outbreak across the district’s sub-districts and urban centres. Five new patients were admitted to the 300-Bed Narayanganj Hospital, whilst another five entered the Narayanganj General Hospital (Victoria Hospital). Meanwhile, upazila health complexes reported further admissions: Rupganj recorded 10 new cases, Araihazar registered eight, Sonargaon identified seven, and Bandar reported two. During the same period, 27 patients were discharged following recovery, with no individuals requiring emergency referral to specialised tertiary facilities in Dhaka.
Encouragingly, health authorities confirmed that no fatalities linked to dengue have been recorded in the district so far this year. However, the rapid escalation in case numbers during mid-September has placed local medical infrastructure under heightened pressure.
Addressing the rising infection trajectory, Dr Sakhawat Hossain emphasised that unhygienic environmental conditions, combined with standing water following seasonal rainfall, have created ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. The Civil Surgeon noted that government hospitals have opened dedicated dengue wards equipped with adequate medical supplies to ensure full care for patients. He stressed that community awareness, regular cleaning of stagnant water, and active vector control remain crucial to containing the spread of the virus across Narayanganj.
