A 17-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Md Sajib, lost his life following a head-on collision between a battery-powered auto-rickshaw and a motorbike in Bhola Sadar upazila. Two other individuals sustained severe injuries during the crash, which occurred around 7:45 pm on Thursday, 17 September, along the Bhola-Ilisha highway near the Burir Masjid area.
The deceased, Sajib, was the son of Md Faruq, a resident of Guptamunshi village located in Ward No. 8 of Ilisha Union within the upazila.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, Sajib borrowed a friend’s motorcycle after dusk and set off towards Bhola town from Paranganj Bazar, accompanied by two of his friends. As the motorcycle negotiated a stretch of the road near Burir Masjid in Bapta Union, it collided head-on with an oncoming battery-operated auto-rickshaw travelling towards Ilisha. The impact left the motorbike and the rickshaw badly damaged, hurling the occupants onto the tarmac.
Sajib, one of his companions, and the driver of the auto-rickshaw suffered grave injuries. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately to rescue the victims, transporting them to Bhola 250-Bed General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Upon evaluating their critical condition, attending doctors at the hospital administered emergency care and advised transferring both Sajib and the auto-rickshaw driver to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced treatment. Tragically, Sajib succumbed to his injuries while en route to Barishal. The identities of the two injured individuals could not be verified immediately following the accident.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhola Sadar Model Police Station, Md Monirul Islam, confirmed the incident, stating that a police team was dispatched to the site shortly after receiving news of the crash. Officers impounded the damaged motorcycle from the scene. Police confirmed that legal procedures regarding the fatal collision are currently underway.
