The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have launched a rigorous crackdown on traffic violations across the capital, resulting in nearly 1,900 cases filed over a 48-hour period. In an official press release issued on Saturday night, the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Department detailed the results of the extensive operations conducted on Thursday, 5 March, and Friday, 6 March 2026.
The traffic division’s multi-pronged approach targeted various high-traffic zones, from the administrative hub of Ramna to the bustling industrial and residential sectors of Uttara and Gulshan. The operation aimed to address rampant issues such as illegal parking, lack of valid documentation, and hazardous driving manoeuvres.
According to the data, the Uttara Traffic Division recorded the highest level of enforcement, accounting for 465 cases. Conversely, the Ramna Division saw the lowest number of filings with 119 cases. A significant portion of the citations across all zones involved motorcycles, highlighting a persistent challenge in regulating two-wheeled transport in the metropolis.
The following table illustrates the distribution of cases across the various traffic divisions and the specific types of vehicles implicated in the crackdown:
| Traffic Division | Buses | Trucks/Vans | CNGs | Motorcycles | Total Cases |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uttara | 47 | 51 | 78 | 186 | 465 |
| Wari | 20 | 86 | 41 | 116 | 320 |
| Gulshan | 18 | 18 | 32 | 105 | 271 |
| Mirpur | 10 | 20 | 36 | 153 | 265 |
| Tejgaon | 12 | 16 | 16 | 102 | 190 |
| Lalbagh | 4 | 13 | 10 | 74 | 134 |
| Motijheel | 8 | 13 | 18 | 75 | 132 |
| Ramna | 7 | 4 | 13 | 36 | 119 |
| Total | 126 | 221 | 244 | 847 | 1,899 |
Beyond the issuance of legal notices, the DMP exercised its authority to remove non-compliant vehicles from the streets immediately. During the two-day surge, a total of 631 vehicles were sent to dumping grounds, while 273 vehicles were forcibly removed using wreckers.
The DMP has reiterated that these operations are not isolated incidents but part of a sustained strategy to instil discipline and enhance road safety within the capital. Authorities emphasized that regular monitoring will continue to deter reckless driving and ensure that public transport operators adhere to the city’s stringent safety protocols. Commuters and motorists are advised to ensure all vehicle registrations and driving permits are up to date to avoid legal complications during future inspections.
