The victim was identified as Rabbi, an eight-year-old second-grade pupil at the local Railway Shishu Vidyaniketan school. He was the son of Salamat Miah, a resident of the Banker Math slum in Tongi.

As he was attempting to navigate through the Natoon Bazar stretch, a speeding covered van struck him unexpectedly. The violent impact knocked him to the tarmac, inflicting severe trauma.

Bystanders and local shopkeepers rushed to his aid immediately after the collision. They rescued the unconscious child and rushed him to the nearby Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi for emergency medical intervention. However, the attending physician pronounced him dead upon arrival due to the severity of the injuries he had sustained.

News of the child’s sudden death spread rapidly through the locality, prompting grief amongst residents and slum dwellers. Police officers arrived swiftly at the scene and the hospital premises to maintain order and manage traffic along the thoroughfare.

The Officer-in-Charge of Tongi East Police Station, Mohammad Maksudul Alam, confirmed the fatality and the details of the police intervention. He stated that law enforcement officers impounded the covered van involved in the crash shortly after the incident. The vehicle’s driver, identified as 27-year-old Russel, was taken into custody from the spot.

Police have initiated an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, focusing on driver negligence and speeding. Formal legal proceedings against the detained driver are currently underway.
