England Opt for Tall Pacer in Adelaide Spin Stronghold

Published: 16 Dec 2025, 03:36 am

England have made a single but striking change to their playing XI for the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, dropping Gus Atkinson and handing an opportunity to the towering fast bowler Josh Tongue. The decision, confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), reflects both form and urgency as England seek to revive their Ashes campaign after falling 2–0 behind in the five-match series.

Atkinson, who featured in the first two Tests, endured a difficult start to the Ashes. Across four innings, he bowled 54 overs, conceding 236 runs while claiming just three wickets. That return stands as the least effective bowling performance among England’s attack in the series so far. With England suffering defeats in Perth and Brisbane, questions naturally arose over his place in the side ahead of the pivotal Adelaide Test. On Tuesday, those doubts were answered when Atkinson was omitted from the XI.

His replacement, Josh Tongue, stands at an imposing 6 feet 4 inches and brings a very different dimension to England’s pace attack. Despite Adelaide traditionally being regarded as the most spin-friendly surface of the Ashes series, England’s selectors have opted for height, bounce and proven wicket-taking ability rather than an additional specialist spinner.

The decision has raised eyebrows, particularly because off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has again been left out. Given the conditions expected at Adelaide, many anticipated Bashir’s inclusion. England, however, have remained consistent in their approach. Bashir was overlooked in both Perth and Brisbane due to conditions, and Australia adopted a similar strategy with their own off-spinner Nathan Lyon—playing him sparingly in Perth and omitting him altogether in Brisbane. Lyon, however, is almost certain to return at Adelaide, a venue where he has enjoyed immense success, taking a record 63 Test wickets.

This contrast has fuelled debate: if Australia trust Lyon on a spin-friendly surface, why have England persisted without Bashir? England’s management, led by head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, appear to believe that Tongue’s high release point and ability to extract bounce could be equally effective on Australian pitches. Both McCullum and Stokes have previously spoken of Tongue’s capacity to trouble batters even on surfaces offering little conventional assistance.

England’s predicament leaves little room for caution. Trailing 2–0, they must win in Adelaide to keep the series alive. The third Test begins early Wednesday morning Bangladesh time, and the pressure on England’s reshaped attack will be immense.

Tongue’s selection is underpinned by an impressive Test record. Since making his debut in 2023, he has taken wickets consistently, most notably against India last July, when he emerged as England’s leading wicket-taker in a five-Test home series.

With England’s backs firmly against the wall, the gamble on height and pace over spin could yet define the direction of this Ashes series.
