A condemned murderer who staged a daring escape from the high-security Kasimpur Central Jail in Gazipur during recent institutional unrest has been apprehended by law enforcement officers in Chittagong.

The fugitive, identified as 35-year-old Md Bahadur Mia, was seized on Friday during a targeted raid conducted by the Special Response Battalion (SRB). Acting on precise intelligence regarding his location, an operational team from SRB-7 ambushed the convict at approximately 12:10 pm in the Foy’s Lake vicinity, situated under the jurisdiction of the Akbar Shah Police Station in Chittagong city.

Bahadur, a native of Kanchan Nagar within the Chandanaish Upazila of Chittagong, was serving a capital sentence for murder at Kasimpur Central High-Security Jail—a facility designated for the state’s most high-risk offenders. He slipped out of the penal institution on 6 August 2024, taking advantage of widespread chaos and breached security parameters surrounding correctional facilities during that tumultuous period. His flight prompted an intensive, multi-agency investigation and a nationwide manhunt.

Following the breach, authority officials launched a formal investigation into the circumstances of the escape. A criminal case was subsequently registered on 15 August 2024 at the Konabari Police Station under the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, formally naming Bahadur as an absconding offender alongside other co-conspirators.

Confirming the operation, Assistant Director (Media) of SRB ARM Muzaffar Hossain stated that the suspect had been maintaining a covert presence in Chittagong to evade detection by intelligence networks. Following his successful capture and preliminary interrogation, Bahadur was transferred to Konabari Police Station for formal processing and subsequent judicial proceedings. Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor penal facilities and track remaining fugitives linked to the August prison breaches.
