Two people lost their lives late on Friday night after a high-speed passenger bus rammed into a stationary lorry on the Jamuna Bridge West Link Highway in Sirajganj district.

The fatal collision occurred around 1:30 am on Saturday in the Talukdar Bazar area, situated under Kamarkhanda Upazila.

The deceased have been identified as 26-year-old Apon Islam, hailing from the Pranmathpur area of Gurbola in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila, and 40-year-old Md Aslam, a resident of Tarash village within Sirajganj’s Tarash Upazila.

According to Sub-Inspector Pronoy Pramanik of Jamuna Bridge West Police Station, the broken-down lorry was parked by the roadside while technicians worked on necessary repairs. Amid the darkness of the late hour, a Dhaka-bound passenger coach operated by Alisha Paribahan, reportedly travelling at high speed, struck the rear of the stationary vehicle with immense force.

The violent impact severely injured two men who were actively involved in fixing the broken-down lorry. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately following the crash, pulling the victims from the wreckage and arranging emergency transport to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital. Upon arrival, attending doctors pronounced both men dead due to critical injuries sustained in the impact.

Law enforcement authorities have seized the Alisha Paribahan bus involved in the smash. Police confirmed that formal legal proceedings have commenced and a case has been registered regarding the incident.

Highways across this corridor experience heavy long-distance freight and passenger traffic connecting the northern districts to the capital. Dim visibility, speeding passenger coaches, and broken-down transport vehicles parked precariously on or beside active carriageways without adequate warning signs frequently contribute to severe road casualties along this vital transport artery. Local authorities routinely urge transport operators to exercise heightened caution and display visible markers when conducting roadside breakdowns to prevent similar tragedies.
