Father and Son Carry Out Deadly Shooting at Sydney Beach

Published: 16 Dec 2025, 05:32 am

A shocking mass shooting unfolded at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, when a father and son opened fire with six firearms, leaving 16 people dead and over 40 injured. All six weapons were seized by the police, and authorities confirmed that they were registered in the name of one of the attackers.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Navid Akram left their home ostensibly to go fishing. Sajid, a member of a recreational shooting club, had all the firearms legally registered in his name. Police said Sajid was shot dead at the scene during the confrontation, while Navid was critically injured and remains in hospital under police guard.

Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack. Four children are among the injured, and by Monday, 26 patients were still receiving treatment across various Sydney hospitals. Two police officers were also seriously injured but are now in stable condition.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke revealed that Navid Akram had previously come under the watch of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) in October 2019 due to concerns regarding his acquaintances. At the time, authorities did not find any immediate threat of terrorist activity.

The community has responded with both grief and solidarity. On Monday, Sydney residents laid flowers at Bondi Beach to honour the victims, while leading political figures visited the site to pay their respects. Police and local authorities have urged all communities, including the expatriate Bangladeshi population, to remain vigilant in the wake of the attack.
