Firefighters in Gazipur have successfully brought a major blaze under control after a grueling three-and-a-half-hour operation at a garment warehouse complex in the West Shoildubi area of Kashimpur. The incident, which involved storage facilities belonging to Supreme Garments and the DBL Group, mobilised nine fire service units before the flames were successfully contained at 1:50 pm on Saturday.
Emergency services were alerted to the outbreak at 10:14 am, with the first fire engines arriving on the scene within eleven minutes. Initial suppression efforts began with five firefighting units, but as the inferno rapidly spread through the flammable materials, authorities dispatched an additional four units to bolster the response team.
According to Kazi Najmuzzaman, Assistant Director of Dhaka Fire Service, the fire originated in a corrugated tin-shed structure housing Supreme Garments’ paper carton warehouse and swiftly engulfed the adjacent yarn warehouse operated by the DBL Group. The packed storage of highly combustible materials—including paper packaging, yarn, and processed fabrics—fueled the rapid expansion of the flames, creating dense smoke and intense heat that complicated early containment efforts.
Operations were further hindered by severe water shortages in the immediate vicinity, forcing crews to draft water from distant sources and stretching response times. Despite these logistical hurdles, the coordinated effort of the nine firefighting teams prevented the fire from spreading to nearby industrial facilities and residential neighborhoods.
Rashed Bin Khalid, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, confirmed that whilst the fire is fully contained, crews remain on site conducting damping-down operations to extinguish hidden hotspots within the debris. The structural components of both tin-shed warehouses, alongside significant inventories of raw materials, paper cartons, and textiles, were completely destroyed.
No casualties or injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the official cause of the ignition, while structural engineers and company officials assess the total financial losses incurred by the two manufacturing firms.
