Sharif Osman Hadi remains in a profoundly critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, with doctors warning that his life continues to hang in the balance. Medical specialists treating him say there is, at present, no clear indication of recovery, and the coming days will be decisive in determining his fate. The grim update was delivered on Friday night, shortly after 9:30 pm, following a visit to Evercare Hospital in the capital by Dr Saidur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. After personally reviewing Hadi’s condition, Dr Rahman told reporters that the next 72 hours represent the most dangerous and crucial period for the injured man. Whether he can survive this critical window remains the foremost concern of the medical team. According to doctors, the bullet entered above Hadi’s left ear and exited through the right side of his head, causing catastrophic damage to highly sensitive areas of the brain. In particular, the brainstem has been severely affected. The brainstem plays a vital role in regulating essential life functions such as breathing, heartbeat and consciousness. Injuries of this magnitude are clinically described as “massive brain injuries” and are associated with an extremely poor prognosis. At present, Hadi is not considered fit for any further surgical intervention. He is being kept alive entirely on life support, with artificial ventilation maintaining his breathing. Physicians have been unable to offer any assurances regarding recovery. Nonetheless, faint signs of life persist, prompting doctors to continue round-the-clock monitoring. During surgery, Hadi reportedly made a minimal attempt to breathe on his own—a fragile but notable sign that doctors are treating with cautious attention. Dr Rahman further revealed that Hadi had gone into shock even before surgery. While being transported by ambulance to hospital, he suffered severe bleeding from his nose and throat, which medical staff later managed to control. The trauma he endured during this period significantly worsened his already precarious condition. Professor Zahid Raihan, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, described the situation in stark terms. He confirmed that Hadi suffered two cardiac arrests following the gunshot injury and lost a large amount of blood. “His condition is beyond description—he is critically ill,” Professor Raihan said. “The fact that he is still alive is remarkable. Beyond this point, everything rests with the will of God.” Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have intensified their investigation into the shooting. Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, Deputy Commissioner of the Motijheel Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said investigators are examining the scene thoroughly. CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being collected and analysed, and efforts are under way to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. Concluding his briefing, Dr Rahman struck a sombre note. “There is no hopeful story to share at this moment,” he said. “We are observing him continuously and will make further decisions based entirely on how his condition evolves.” As Hadi stands on the fragile boundary between life and death, the next 72 hours are set to be the most defining of all.
